1 to 1 subject Specific Tutoring: GCSE English Exams & Functional Skills (tailored to learners with SpLd)

Through careful observation & evidence based assessment, I start by identifying and assessing the needs of the learner and planning a programme around this.

The sessions will be delivered in a mix of multi-sensory approaches, with the addition of practical work where necessary.

Session Content

I can help students with dyslexia to improve GCSE English & Functional Skills grades through:

  • Using multi-sensory approaches to revise (visual & interactive) - This includes making revision fun with reinforcement games, modelling scenes with clay & if wanted, acting out scenes, hot seat characters.

  • Comic strips alongside GCSE English Literature to aid clarity.

  • Skills based exam revision - Working through the GCSE assessment objectives individually.

  • Discussions designed to aid acquisition & metacognition skills - These support understanding of what the question is specifically asking the learner to do.

  • Support with planning answers & structuring essays using; writing frames, sentence starters, graphic organisers, mind maps, word mats and modelled correct responses.

  • Using laminated prompt questions, to encourage the learner to think about why they are reading a text and what to look for.

  • Key words vocabulary with visual support - using 'Word Aware' approach, that explicitly teaches definitions, encourages drawing images alongside & putting words into sentences.
